ek doctor ki kahani...

its frustrating sometimes---a doctors life...
at the end of the day,it is never the lives saved which matter but only the unsuccessful attempts that come to haunt u!!

nobody ever seems to ask the doctor how she is feeling
or rather on second thoughts, does she feel at all!!..thats the attitude isnt it??

ive heard people calling doctors insensitive...emotionless...uncaring...
while some prefer stating it straight and blunt, some prefer to taunt subtly by saying something like 'doctors are strong ppl.undeterred..unaffected by anything'...and its not always meant in a compliment kinda way...

well ,all i gotta say is just because we dont cry and weep dosent mean we dont hurt or it dosent matter...
just because we had to learn to dissect human cadavers in first yr of med school, dosent mean we treat our patients as one...
it might seem mechanical our approach sometimes..but that dosent mean we dont care...
the best of surgeons might seem mechanical to u only because they are trying to save another life in the next 5 mins...
if we dont give ur 'headache' too much time, its probably because we are disturbed over another patients 'tumour'...
if we sometimes appear preoccupied, it dosent mean we are insensitive but it may be because we have a life too and no matter how much we try to keep the two off each other, there are times when our personal lives do interfere with our professional life...
we too have emotions...
we too get upset when something goes wrong with some patient...
just that we prefer not to show it...how would u like ur doctor sobbing out for some other patient while dealing with u??
and then we are supposed to be dealing with the truth right? but how many patients actually want to hear it??

its not an easy job...to detach urself from one case history to another...
sometimes its scary..sometimes u feel like the messenger of impending doom...
yes its great to see a patient recovering and leaving for home...but it also feels equally miserable to see a patient who's admitted going home the wrong way...
and amidst all this it gets pretty unnerving and difficult to put up a balanced act all the time...

and yet some ppl complain...i mean hell!!just because one stupid miserable wretch of a doctor refused to admit some seriously ill relative without letting him sign some admission papers or just because one money oriented bastard instead of choosing engg (no offence to the profession)opted for medicine and vented out his frustration later by getting involved in kidney scams or some organ transplant scandal and playing with life, u give the entire medical profession a bad name???
why this stereotype???
isnt it stupid to be soo biased?

'benefit of doubt' is all a doctor can ask for sometimes...
is that asking for too much??

p.s: i understand many think differently and regard the medical profession very highly and with due respect...
but this post was triggered off by something someone said...
sorry for rattling off maybe just too much...

well Pri, frankly, people respond based on their personal expereinces... so may be they r true at times... but yes, agreeing the fact that stereotyping shldnt take place...

Doctors do save life everyday and i still respect those who saved the life of my dad :)

I have several doctors in my near family and i knw all of them... they arent such kinda...

but i am not the apt person may be, coz i have had both kinda experiences where i was looted by doctors and also where they actually responded to me quite well too!!!

and btw.... whos the one??

Cheers!!!

@ endevourme
glad u agree :)

@ ankur
who it is dosent really matter ankur...its the 'mentality' wch disturbs me...
as for some behaving curtly while others being polite...i think i should give them a benefit of doubt too...like i said in the post, there are days when u have problems balancing ur act (just like everyone else)...
i agree its wrong to be impolite...but u definitely cant expect the doctor to sit and haver a nice chat with u over ur headache when there are dozens of other patients in line...

when it comes to charging for consultation, i would judge a doctor by what he charges someone who cant afford the treatment than from someone who very much can...
dont get me wrong...im not saying i believe in the 'robinhood' philosophy either...but if a doctor charges a patient who can afford to (rightfully ofcourse for the treatment), i wont say he is 'looting' the guy :)

cheers!!

@ chakoli
im glad u think so...and i agree most ppl think this way...
but there are a few ppl who get very biased..i guess it cant be helped...
take care!
and thanks :)

Girl...I think people react coz of what they have had to face. Of course we all got thru shit, and mustnt vias owr views wrt that. But the world cant be tamed now, is it.

I have heard ppl talk about architects that, we dont do anything other than drawing stupid lines, and make ppl pay.

Stupid lines !!! HOw derogatory !! Those stupid lines stand for the stupid walls and roofs that the morons are gonna stay in.

But I choose to ignore them. My sis just got into medical. And she relates to me all her gory cadaver dissection stories down to littlest details.....with the excitement of a child, after the puke phase of hers got over...lol !!

Doesnt know whats about to come. The world isnt an easy place to live. Lets face it with grace.

Everywhere in every profession...you can find a small percent of people who are not true to their work...but that doesnt mean that everything and every profession is wrong...
Same goes to medicine also...
how can we forget that doctors are the only ones who always living in a world of pain and grief... but still gives u a smile care and affection.

You people are doing great job.

Cheers :-)

What I feel is sometimes people behave morre of emotionally then practically and when a peron thinks emotionally he forgets whom he is talking with...
you are right...some time people do speak or feel tht Doctors dont have heart...but I know its not at all true...

salaam doctorni sahiba :)

and a nice tight slap to whoever said all those mean things to you. its just being ungrateful methinks, chhota sa sar-dard ho gaya to run to the docs, and then when all's well, say bad things? bad bad bad people! Dr. Pri, can't even say don't treat those morons :( just give 'em a nice kick when they're all well and abt to leave ;)

@ cindrella
no cindy we have every right to voice our opinion but not to someone least responsible and at that too in an accusing and demeaning way...then thats not fair!
yaa can understand what u must be feeling when they say that about archi's
congrats to ur sis on joining medicine...tell her she's welcome to the mad (oops sorry 'med') house and ask her to gear up because theres a lot to face here...
the cadavers are just a silent delight...wait till she comes to the clinical side :D
but at the end of the day, (despite the small odds)its all worth it :)

about facing it with grace, i guess u r right...but sometimes it does get on ur nerves..and venting out is okay sometimes...
helps u feel better...:)

cheers!!

@ karthik s
thanks a lot for saying that...it feels great when ppl appreciate ur honest intentions :)

@ veens
thanks dear!..i know u do...

but it does get stressful sometimes esp when ppl dont understand...
neways im feeling better now :)

@ blogboy
i understand blogboy and upto a point its all okay and tolerable...but one should make sure not to cross limits isnt it?
and besides some ppl have this irritating habit of saying things just to demean others...
its not about the emotions or experiences anyways...
i think its more about the 'superego' they harbour...

neways thanks for the words of appreciation...:)
take care!

@ aneri masi
haha...u think they would say something like that when they are 'being' treated?? thankfully itne bhi besharam nahi ho gaye hain log...sigh!

the person i was talking about in the post was not a patient but an acquaintance who voiced his opinion in sucha brutally curt manner that his mentality really disturbed me :(

anyways im okay now...

Pri said...

@ mez
yaa i guess ur right...such exceptions are found everywhere unfortunately :(
but im glad u think this way...
its nice knowing ur work is appreciated...

take care!

@ sutta
haha i wish we could all say the same...
but yaa have to admit, u guys are professional 'dream-makers' for the public :D
keep up the good work!!

@ chakoli
yes ur right...chalo left them ;)

@ keshi
yaa and its ery prejudiced of them to do that :-/

neways...
im glad u like the ghazal...its by 'jagjit singh' the maestro of ghazals...

pri...medicine is the noblest of all professions...I for one would be more than happy to be in any doc's shoes...there's a flip side to it...people apotheosis you ,they sometimes expect the unexpected...and when their hopes crash they resort to this sort of blame game

Pri said...

yes you're right..it is being presumed that doctors are greedy, money oriented people who don't care much about saving the lives..thing is many of those so called doctors haven't made things easier for the good one..besides if the same would've happened with anyone even we would be saying the same..its a tough job being a doctor as people's lives are on the edge & one mistake could be clinical..no one tends to understand the feelings of the doctors, infact they don't bother about it whatsoever..all they know & think that since they've paid cash now their work should be done no matter what happens..i remember my grandfather had an open heart surgery at a very famous surgical hospital..till the very last moment it was being told that his blood group is O negative but before the surgery outa no where they came to know that its O positive..now can you believe it? Right at the time of surgery we were looking for the blood donors as none of us had O positive blood group..now despite the fact that surgery went very good but still after that my grandfather was hesitant going for medical checkups..so i believe first impression is the last impression..atleast for most of the people & for them doctors are no different.

ur rattling is pretty justified considering ure a doc urself...
this made me want to take back something i said long ago... "i don't like doctors", yup im (was) guilty of generalization too :(

sid said...

Very true!!! Having my life so close to this profession can totally imagine it.
PS: Liked your space & with dada(Jagjit Singh) playing as I came by-just dint feel like leaving. Nice:-)

alok said...

I don't see the post as too much ... and you are absolutely right while making those points.

But don't you think there are exceptional case w.r.t docs, and you need to treat that comment as one.

Pri said...

@ an illusion
im really sorry about what happ with ur grandpa...i agree that doctor must have been a real ass to make a gross mistake like that...
its true that first impressions are often the last impression...esp in cases as serious as these...but would u judge everyone based on the first impression uve had about one person belonging to the same field?? think about it...

it would be as silly and immature as someone going thru a break up and then lablling all men as bastards :)

cheers!!

@ ceedy
lol!! would say trying to get on top of the world but somehow keep getting pulled below it :(

@ vands
its okay vands...not many ppl like us :)

@ roshan r
i read that post...
cant we expect to be understood sometimes?? :(

Pri said...

@ sid
glad u liked it here :)
it was nice of you to drop by...
and thanks for understanding...what profession are u in??

@ alok
well ive lately heard about a lot of these exceptional cases :-/
besides this post was mainly a ranting about that one person who said it...hope he reads it though...

Anonymous said...

I definitely won't be categorizing them in the same category as i believe all five fingers aren't alike..its so good to hear something like that from you as i have seen/heard & read many people doing exactly what you've mentioned i.e: bashing all men after getting a divorce or a breakup regardless of the fact that she herself might be the reason of all this.
